This vivid postcard captures Profile
Lake in New Hampshire’s White
Mountains, its rocky shores framed
by the “Old Man of the Mountain”
granite profile—lost to collapse in
2003—echoed in the lake and Profile
House resort’s name. Anna Pfeiffer,
a mother vacationing with friends,
scribbled a note from the resort’s
elegance, mailing it from nearby
Flume House to her daughter Sadie,
a young mill worker in Rhode Island.
This card evokes an Edwardian
family’s fleeting escape to Franconia
Notch’s timeless splendor. The Profile
House, a 600-guest haven opened in
1853, stood until its 1923 fire.
